威福瑞．塞西格1910年生於阿迪斯阿貝巴（現在的衣索比亞首都），曾就讀於伊頓公學和牛津大學，並曾代表牛津參加校際拳擊賽。1935年，他加入蘇丹政治局，大戰爆發後被暫調蘇丹保防隊，其後陸續在阿比西尼亞（現在的衣索比亞）、敘利亞及西部沙漠等地服役，曾獲頒傑出服務獎章。戰後他遍遊阿拉伯南部、庫德斯坦、伊拉克沼澤、興都庫什、喀拉崑崙山脈、摩洛哥、阿比西尼亞、肯亞和坦干伊喀等地，且均以徒步或以牲口代步。由於旅遊成果豐碩，曾獲頒「英國皇家地理學會」的創辦人獎、「英國皇家中亞學會」的阿拉伯勞倫斯獎、「英國皇家蘇格蘭地理學會」的利文斯敦金獎，以及「英國皇家亞洲學會」的柏頓紀念獎。他目前是「英國皇家文藝學會」的榮譽會員以及「大英科學院」的榮譽院士。1968年，他獲頒大英帝國武士勳章和衣索比亞的三等星勳章。
